The action of the pitcher is smooth and continuous, while the back foot
leaves the plate there appears to be some contact with the ground (the
pitcher may push-off and drag the pivot foot). Did the pivot foot get
airborne? Maybe yes and maybe no. I don't think so looking at the video and
if it did by how much? If he is no more than just an inch or so or if we
have to get down on our knees to see clearly that he is not in contact with
the ground, then he is in contact. Looking at the video there seems to be a
drag mark which would suggest that he is in contact at least some of the
time if not all of the time.
While the pitching action is broken up into many parts, the important thing
is to look at the overall action of the pitcher and not focus on just one
area or aspect.
My understanding is that while he was called early in the tournament. What
we are looking at here would appear to be alright.

Hi Charles,
ReplyDeleteIf we were to look closely at the normal pace video, we would see that when he lands his back foot, there is a puff of dust.
If he had dragged his back foot, there would be a continous scape of dust travelling with the drag. If we can get the whole tape of the game, it happens on 90% of the pitches thrown by him.
He wasn't called but the NZ pitcher was called in the first inning. I have looked at the game over three days and each time, it becomes clearer.
In some instances, it is even more clear especially when executing a change-up.
In others, he lands his front foot completely outside the pitching circle. he would have had to have really long legs to have done that.
But without any prejudice to anyone, it would depend on the umpire calling the game at the moment.
Dear Neville,
Thanks for your comments. I have been to a International Tournament as a coach quite a number of years ago and I found that there is some loose interpretation of the rules where pitching is concerned.
I have had comments that said that a small jump is alright while some says that even a small jump is not correct.
Do hope that you do not get my intentions wrong but I am always seeking to improve myself.
Thanks for your comments and best wishes.
